Idea Corner: Gemstone Glitz Hanging Wall Art

Ok, so we've still been reeling with inspiration from our Shine Bright Like a Diamond blog last week. So today we're bringing you a little DIY project one of our colleagues tried out herself - and is it bedazzling!

How do you do it? Simple! Start with a watercolor artwork (if you don't have one, you can always download some excellent ones from Creative Market for as low as $2). From there, what you'll need is:

  • One artwork print, dye-sublimated on metal (this one was 8x8). For super bright whites and that glossy effect, make sure to get it printed on metal gloss white.

  • One birchwood panel, 1-5/8" deep (also 8x8 to match the print). This one was painted black the overall piece would look more like it was "floating". If you are going to paint the wood any color, remember to prime it first!

  • Finally, some double-sided Mounting Tape (this you can find at any dollar store)

Now that you have all three pieces, here are the steps for mounting the artwork:

  1. Cut out some strips of double sided mounting tape, and adhere them flat on the panel.
  2. Carefully line up one side of the print with one edge of the wood panel. Don't stick too early unless you know you've aligned it perfectly - once it's stuck, it's very stuck.
  3. When you're certain - stick it and smooth it out! That's it!

And there you have it, ta-dah!! A beautiful gemstone wall art to call your own. The super glossiness also deepens the colors of the print, which really makes it appear as though the gem were truly 3D and alive. Love it!

If you're giving it a try, let us know in the comments how it goes! We would love to hear from you. Happy creating!
