There will be 'Nikon 100th Anniversary Award' and 'next Generation Award' that targets the discovery of fresh young talent this year. History

The Nikon Photo Contest International has been held by Nikon Corporation since 1969 to provide an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and to enrich image-making culture for professionals and amateurs alike. 

In the last 10 years, with the wide penetration of digital cameras with video capabilities, the environment surrounding image-making has dramatically changed. Adapting to this change, the 34th contest was reconceived, changing its name and its structure, and it continues to evolve to create new standards and provide new opportunities for discovery.

Artists: The Picture-In-Picture Series By An Artist Duo

An artist duo from Germany Hank Schmidt in der Beek and photographer Fabian Schubert have been working on collaborative project since 2009, a humorous series of photographs called Und im Sommer tu ich malen (“And in the Summer, I do paint”). Schubert captures der Beek working on his original outdoor paintings (plein air paintings) at different scenic locations in Europe where renowned painters from history such as Cezanne, Monet, and Van Gogh have been inspired. 

However, there is a twist to this photography series: in der Beek is captured painting the pattern of his shirt instead of focusing on the magnificent landscape around him. in der Beek explains his thought process by saying: "Confronted with the immenseness of the mountains and the littleness of my canvasses, I decided to paint what’s nearest to me instead of what’s afield and giant.” 

I too get overwhelmed by majestic views of nature, not even bothering to try to portray what I see on paper. Rather, I would just immerse myself in the scene. in der Beek takes one extra step to actually acknowledge and show his feeling about his littleness and mereness in a humorous way. The duo's artistic approach is definitely something for anyone to think about.

Artist: Clever Photo Manipulations By Francesco Vullo

Francesco Vullo is Sicily born artist who studied at Institute of Design (IED) in Milan, where he just graduated in illustration and animation in July 2016. Congratulations!

Vullo's works reflects contemporary culture with messages of social criticism. The artist juxtaposes the visualization of the world/society/culture with something else in surreal representations to communicate with emotions. Although Vullo uses bright vivide colors to his works, the inner meaning of each pieces are never stays light or shallow, meaning that the artist is playing with the idea of juxtaposition in both of the content and visuals of his works.

I found it exciting to first look at Vullo's visually pleasing manipulated photographs and then to analyze the internal meaning of the images. Try to come up with your own interpretation or to find the artist's intended message for each pieces of work. :)

Artist: Thomas Jackson's Emergent Behavior

Thomas Jackson is a San Francisco-based photographer who constructs temporary installations to make individual shots of photograph as part of his series, Emergent Behavior series. He creates various structures that imply movement of both visible (light) and invisible (wind) energy by placing multiples of common objects such as plastic cups, hula hoops, and party decors. I personally love it when I come across artworks of visually satisfying craftsmanship in this era of massive digitally generated images. Read below of Jackson's comment on his series:

The images attempt to tap the mixture of fear and fascination that those phenomena tend to evoke, while creating an uneasy interplay between the natural and the manufactured and the real and the imaginary. At the same time, each image is an experiment in juxtaposition. By constructing the installations from unexpected materials and placing them where they seem least to belong, I aim to tweak the margins of our visual vocabulary, and to invite fresh interpretations of everyday things.

Jackson will be showing many images from Emergent Behavior at Miller Yezerski Gallery in Boston starting November 18, 2016.

Linus Lundin AKA YASH is a mural artist based in Stockholm who draws inspiration from people, animals and their feelings. Light, colors and emotion play a central role in his work as well as a love for shapes and simplicity. YASH's use of color for these dewy-eyed girls are like a dream!
